General Questions

How do I assemble my vacuum?

<go to 0:40 in the above video for instructions on how to assemble your vacuum>

  • Insert the wand into the floor nozzle.
  • Snap the onboard storage clip onto the wand and slide it down until it clicks in place.
  • Remove the Odour Neutraliser Technology dial from the bag.  Flip up the dial handle, align the teal arrow on the dial with the teal arrow on the nozzle, then insert the dial into the nozzle.
  • Lock and engage the dial by rotating it counterclockwise until it clicks into the desired odor intensity setting.
  • Store accessories on the onboard storage clip.

For proper operation, ensure all parts are firmly clicked into place.

How do I use the different cleaning modes?

This Shark® vacuum has three powerful settings for cleaning.

To switch between modes, tap the mode button to toggle between Detect, Hard Floor, and Carpet modes. (The mode button is located next to the power button.)

Detect Mode: Select Detect mode to activate Floor Detect technology. In this mode, the vacuum will detect floor different types and will automatically adjust suction and brushroll speed on each surface to maximize cleaning performance.

Manual Surface Modes: Select one of the manual surface modes (Hard Floor or Carpet) to clean specific surfaces without Floor Detect technology.

  • Select Hard Floor Mode for surfaces like wood or tile.
  • Select Carpet Mode for both low- and high-pile carpets.

Note: Some thin or small area rugs can be pulled up by the vacuum's very high suction. We recommend attaching the Upholstery Tool to the wand to clean these rugs.

How do I detach the handheld for portable above-floor cleaning?

To clean above-floor areas:

  • Detach the handheld from the wand. Press the Wand Release button and pull up the wand to detach.
  • Detach the wand from the floor nozzle. Step on the foot pedal on the side of the nozzle and pull up on the wand to detach.
  • Attach a cleaning accessory to either the handheld or the end of the wand.
What happens if I experience small static shocks while I am vacuuming?

Certain dry temperatures in winter or dry desert areas may cause common static electricity to build up in the vacuum, producing small shocks, similar to what you might experience from contact with doorknobs, wool sweaters, or blankets. This is harmless. To avoid this, we recommend moisturizing your hands and/or removing wool socks or sweaters prior to vacuuming.

How do I store my vacuum?

To store the vacuum upright, detach the handheld vacuum and hang it from the storage hook on the front of the wand. Then wrap the power cord around the cord hooks.

Cleaning and Maintenance

When and how do I clean the filters?

<go to 0:53 in the above video for instructions on how to access and clean your filters>

Filters may need to be cleaned if the vacuum stops picking up dirt, if airflow is restricted, or if you notice lighter or no suction. For optimal cleaning and Odour Neutraliser Technology performance, clean filters regularly. Between cleanings, lightly tap filters over a trash receptacle to remove dust and debris as needed.

Rinse the pre-motor foam and felt filters every month, or as needed.

  • To access the pre-motor filters, first remove the dust cup. Press the two release buttons and pull the dust cup out of the hand vac.
  • Locate the filter access touchpoint on top of the dust cup lid and pull the filter housing up to remove it from the dust cup.
  • Remove the foam and felt filters from the housing. Lift out the foam filter, then remove the felt filter by the pull tab.
  • Rinse both filters with water only.
  • Allow filters to air-dry completely (at least 24 hours) before reinstalling.
  • Once the filters have dried, install the felt filter into the housing first, followed by the foam filter.
  • Reinstall the filter housing into the dust cup, then reinsert the dust cup until it clicks into place.

Rinse the post-motor filter every 12 months, or as needed.

  • With the dust cup removed, pull the release tab on the front of the handvac and remove the HEPA filter cover.
  • Press the two side tabs on the HEPA filter and lift it out.
  • Rinse the post motor filter with water only.
  • Allow filter to air-dry completely (at least 24 hours) before reinstalling.
  • Once the post motor filter has dried, reinstall it.
  • Reattach the post motor filter cover until it clicks into place.

Note: Do not place filters in the dishwasher or washing machine.

How do I access and clean the main brushroll?
  • Detach the wand from the nozzle by stepping on the foot pedal on the side of the nozzle and pulling up on the wand.
  • Turn the floor nozzle over and set it on a flat surface.
  • Using scissors, carefully remove any string, hair, or debris that may be wrapped around the brushroll.
  • Reattach the wand to the nozzle until it clicks into place.

Note: Do not vacuum wet messes.

When and how do I empty the dust cup?

<go to 0:26 in the above video for instructions on how to empty the dust cup>

For optimal performance, empty the dust cup each time you vacuum, or when debris reaches the MAX FILL line.

  • Press the two release buttons on the sides of the dust cup and pull the dust cup out of the handvac.
  • Hold the dust cup over the bin. Pull back on the yellow Empty button and pull the dust cup lid open until it clicks and locks in the open position.
  • Tap the dust cup gently to empty the contents. Clear debris from the cone-shaped screen inside the dust cup.
  • Close the dust cup lid, then reinsert the dust cup into the handvac until it clicks into place.
What should I do if the Soft Roller doesn't eject when I slide the release button forward?

If the Soft Roller doesn't eject when you slide the button forward, it may be caught in some debris.

Slide the button forward again. If the roller still won't eject, try again, while gently pulling on the right corner of the roller. This should eject the roller and dislodge any debris.

Once the Soft Roller has been ejected, carefully remove any remaining hair or debris from the roller and its connection points in the nozzle.

Once all debris has been removed, reinsert the roller and slide the release button forward again.

Why is my vacuum pulling up area rugs?

The vacuum cleaner has powerful suction that can sometimes pull up small or thin area rugs. To prevent the rug from being pulled up and stalling the vacuum, avoid vacuuming corners and edges. If the rug is still being pulled up, manually set the vacuum to Hard Floor mode for these surfaces. If the rug is still being pulled up in hard floor mode, remove the nozzle and attach the Upholstery Tool to the wand to vacuum smaller area rugs.

Detect Technology Questions

Why should I use Detect mode?

Detect mode activates Floor Detect technology. In this mode, the vacuum will detect different floor types and will automatically adjust brushroll speed to maximize cleaning performance on each surface. We recommend using Detect mode for the best user experience.

What is Floor Detect™?

Floor Detect identifies the type of floor surface you are vacuuming and adjusts brushroll speed for optimized cleaning on each surface.

Why does the icon on the nozzle change?

The icons on the nozzle indicate which surface setting is currently active.

When and how to clean the Floordetect sensor?

Make sure to clean the Floordetect sensor regularly, as hair and other debris may build up and obstruct the sensors. If the sensor is partially obstructed, Floordetect mode will not function as expected.

To easily access the nozzle for sensor cleaning, step on the foot pedal to detach the nozzle from the wand.

Locate the FloorDetect sensor on the bottom of the nozzle.

Use a cotton swab to wipe away dirt and debris from the sensor and surrounding area.

Odor Neutrailizer Technology Questions

How do I Install the odor neutralizer technology system?

1. Remove the odor neutralizer technology dial from the bag. Flip up the dial handle, align the teal arrows, then insert the dial into the nozzle.

2. To lock and engage the dial, rotate it counterclockwise until it clicks into the desired odor intensity setting.

How do I replace the cartridge in my odor neutralizer technology system?
  • Flip up the handle and rotate the dial clockwise until the two teal arrows are aligned. Pull the handle to remove the dial from the nozzle.
  • Rotate the cartridge counterclockwise in the dial housing and pull out the cartridge to remove it.
  • Remove the new odor cartridge from the sealed packaging. To maintain the life of the cartridge, keep it in the sealed packaging until you are ready to install it.
  • To lock in place, rotate the cartridge clockwise until the yellow arrow on the cartridge clicks into place and points to the yellow lock on the dial cover.
  • Align the teal arrow on the dial cover with the teal arrow on the nozzle, then reinsert the dial into the nozzle. Rotate the dial counterclockwise until it clicks into an intensity setting to engage. Rotate further to change the intensity setting.
  • Dispose of old cartridge by dropping it in the trash.
How do I adjust the intensity setting of my odor neutralizer technology system?
  • Flip up the dial handle and rotate the odor dial to adjust odor neutralizer technology intensity or to unlock the dial for cartridge access.
  • To lower the intensity: rotate the dial toward the Low position to decrease the intensity to the lowest level when the vacuum is in use.

  • Dispose of cartridge by dropping it in the trash.
The odor neutralizer technology system has no smell, or is less intense. Is it working?

The intensity of the odor neutralizer technology’s fragrance may diminish over time. It may also have no noticeable fragrance at all. This is natural and does not indicate the technology isn’t working. Follow replacement instructions to ensure continued performance.

This technology only works when the vacuum is in operation.

My vacuum is emitting air that smells bad. Is my odor neutralizer technology not working?
  • Check the dust cup as it may be full. Empty the dust cup if needed and empty the dust cup after each use for optimal odor neutralizer technology performance.
  • If you vacuumed up particularly bad-smelling debris such as a wet pet mess, thoroughly clean the interior of the vacuum to remove any remaining problem debris from the system.
  • Check the filters to see if they need cleaning. Follow instructions for rinsing and air-drying the filters before reinstalling them.
  • Make sure the odor cartridge is installed in the dial and the dial is installed in the nozzle correctly.
  • Check the odor neutralizer technology dial on the nozzle to see what setting is enabled. If the odor neutralizer technology dial is on Low, consider increasing the intensity.
  • If the cartridge has been installed for 6 months or longer, consider replacing it. Whenever installing a new cartridge, write the date on the cartridge as a reminder to replace it after 6 months.
Is any maintenance required for my odor neutralizer technology system?
  • Clean all filters as recommended in the Owner's Guide.
  • Empty the dust cup before storing your vacuum.
  • Replace the cartridge every 6 months.
  • If wet pet messes are cleaned up, thoroughly clean the vacuum.
How should I dispose of my old odor neutralizer technology cartridges?

The odor neutralizer technology cartridges can be disposed of in the trash. Do not litter. Due to their size, cartridges cannot be recycled.

Is the odor neutralizer technology safe to use around pets and children?

Yes, but please read the Owner's Guide and carefully follow all warnings and safety instructions.

How does the Odor Neutralizer Technology work? Does it have an air freshener smell and mask the odor?

The Odor Neutralizer Technology molecules are specially created to seek out the bad odors inside your vacuum and transform them for a
better overall experience. As the vacuum operates, the Odor Neutralizer Technology molecules interact with the odorous debris as it moves through the vacuum's system leaving a fresher smell coming out of the exhaust. There is also the option to adjust the intensity of the smell to your liking, right on the nozzle.
