General Questions

How do I assemble my vacuum?

For proper operation, ensure all parts are firmly clicked into place.

  • Push the vacuum pod down onto the floor nozzle post until it clicks into place.
  • Connect the hose at the bottom of the pod to the floor nozzle. Push with a slight turning motion to create a snug fit.
  • Slide the handle into the opening at the top of the pod. Rotate it while pushing down to ensure it is securely in place.
  • Screw the handle in place using the included nut and bolt.
  • Insert the extension wand through the ring on the side of the vacuum pod and into the top of the nozzle hose.
  • Attach the hose:
    • Insert the hose into the hose connector located on the back of the vacuum pod. It will click into place.
    • Route hose down through the anti-tip hook to prevent vacuum from tipping.
    • Run hose up over the upper holder.
    • Insert hose securely into the top of the extension wand.
How do I use the different cleaning modes?

This Shark® vacuum has two powerful settings for cleaning.

To clean bare floors or with accessories:

  • Press the power/surface selector switch to setting I, Hard Floor.
  • Activate the brushroll by tilting the handle back while gently stepping on the floor nozzle. Note that the brushroll will spin slower in this mode.

Note: Use setting I for easier maneuverability on area rugs.

To clean carpets:

  • Press the power/surface selector switch to setting II, Carpet.
  • Activate the brushroll by tilting the handle back while gently stepping on the floor nozzle. Note that the brushroll will spin in faster this mode.

Note: Move the suction control slider on the handle to MIN to reduce suction when vacuuming carpets. Slide to MAX for more suction on bare floors.

How do I clean above floors with or without accessories?

Press the Handle Release button on the back of the handle. Gently pull up on the handle to remove it from the wand.

For more cleaning reach, leave the handle on the wand, and detach the wand from the floor nozzle. Press the Wand Release button on the top of the pod, then gently pull up on the handle to remove the wand.

Attach an accessory to the handle or the wand and begin cleaning.

How and when do I adjust the suction?

The settings on the suction control slider on the handle adjusts suction power.

Note: Ensure the power/surface selector switch is set to the correct floor type before adjusting suction power at the handle.

  • For low-pile carpets, ensure the suction control slider is set to MAX for the best cleaning results possible.
  • For high-pile carpets or area rugs in which it is particularly difficult to push, pull, or maneuver the vacuum, set the suction slider to MIN.
  • For hard floors, set the suction slider to the MAX setting.
How do I detach the pod for portable cleaning?

To detach the pod to clean floors in Lift-Away® mode:

  • First release the power cord by turning the top cord hook.
  • Step on red Lift-Away® pedal on the side of the nozzle.
  • Detach the pod from the nozzle by pulling up on the dust cup handle.
  • Press the Handle Release button to detach the handle from the top of the wand.
  • For more reach, leave the handle on the wand and detach the wand from the pod.
  • Press the Wand Release button on the top of the pod and lift up the handle to remove the wand.
  • Attach a cleaning accessory, and select setting I, Hard Floor.
What happens if I experience small static shocks while vacuuming?

Certain dry temperatures in winter or in dry desert areas may cause common static electricity to build up in the vacuum, producing small shocks, similar to what you might experience from contact with doorknobs, wool sweaters, or blankets. This is harmless. In order to avoid this, we recommend moisturizing your hands and/or removing wool socks or sweaters prior to vacuuming.

Cleaning and Maintenance

When and how do I clean the filters?

Filters may need to be cleaned if the vacuum stops picking up dirt, if airflow is restricted, or if you notice lighter suction or no suction.

For optimal performance, clean the filters regularly. Between cleanings, lightly tap filters over a trash receptacle to remove dust and debris as needed.

Rinse the pre-motor foam and felt filters every 3 months, or as needed.

  • First, remove the dust cup to access the pre-motor filters.
  • Slide up the release latches on both sides of the dust cup handle. Lift the dust cup up and away from the pod.
  • Remove the foam and felt filters.
  • Rinse both filters with water only.
  • Allow filters to air-dry completely (at least 24 hours) before reinstalling.
  • Once dry, install the felt filter first, followed by the foam filter.
  • Reinstall the dust cup by placing the bottom of the dust cup into the pod and then tilting until it clicks into place.

Rinse the post-motor HEPA filter every 12 months, or as needed.

  • Pull the latch under the HEPA filter cover and lift off the cover. This is located underneath the Lift-Away® logo on the bottom of the pod.
  • Remove the HEPA filter.
  • Rinse the filter with water only.
  • Allow filter to air-dry completely (at least 24 hours) before reinstalling.
  • Once dry, reinstall the HEPA filter.
  • Reattach the HEPA filter cover until it clicks into place.
When and how do I empty the dust cup?

For optimal performance, empty the dust cup each time you vacuum, or when debris reaches the MAX FILL line.

  • Slide up the release latches on both sides of the dust cup handle. Lift the dust cup up and away from the pod.
  • Hold the dust cup over the trash and press the bottom door release button on the back. The door will open.
  • Tap the dust cup gently to empty contents.
  • Close the dust cup door, pressing it until it clicks into place.
  • If needed, turn the dust cup upside down over the trash and pull the top door release tab.
  • Tap gently to remove contents. Clear debris from the cone-shaped screen.
  • Wipe the interior of the dust cup clean. To reinstall, place bottom of dust cup into the pod and then tilt until it clicks into place.
How do I access and clean the brushroll?
  • Make sure the unit is unplugged.
  • Detach the pod from the floor nozzle by pressing Lift-Away® button on the side of the pod. Lift off the pod and set it aside.
  • Place the nozzle on the floor with the brushroll facing up.
  • Remove hair and other debris from the brushroll and airway.
  • Use scissors to carefully cut away anything wrapped around the brushroll. Avoid damaging or cutting the bristles.
How do you maintain the self-cleaning brushroll?

If you see any hair wrapped around the self-cleaning brushroll, extending the cleaning time will assist in removing it for you. We recommend extending cleaning time using the setting II (Carpet) on bare-floor surfaces to allow hair to make its way to the dust cup.

If some fibers or string remain wrapped around the brushroll after continued use, carefully cut away any fibers or hair with scissors and remove from brushroll. Clear away any debris from the airways in the floor nozzle.
